Brihaspati ji said – O Brahmin. You are the most intelligent, the best of all who know all the scriptures and the four Vedas. Oh, God! Please listen to my word. Why Navratri is fasted and celebrated in the Shukla Paksha of Chaitra, Ashwin, and Ashadha months? Oh, God! What is the result of this fast? What is the right way to do it? And who did this fast first? So tell me in detail?
Hearing such a question of Brihaspati ji, Brahma ji started saying that O Jupiter! You asked a very good question with the desire to benefit the living beings. Blessed are the people who meditate on Durga, Mahadevi, Surya and Narayan who fulfill their desires, this Navratri fast is going to fulfill all the wishes. By doing this, the one who wants a son can get a son, the one who wants wealth, the one who wants knowledge, and the one who wants happiness can get happiness. By observing this fast, the disease of the sick person gets removed and the person who is imprisoned is freed from bondage. All the objections of a man are removed and all the properties come and appear in his house. By observing this fast, a son is born to a bandhya and a kak bandhya.
What is the moral that cannot be proved by observing this fast, which removes all sins? The person who does not observe the Navratri fast even after attaining a vulgar human body becomes inferior to his parents, that is, his parents die and suffers many sorrows. He gets leprosy in his body and becomes inferior in limbo, he does not have children. In this way, that fool suffers many miseries. A ruthless person who does not observe this fast, devoid of wealth and grain, roams the earth with hunger and thirst and becomes dumb. The widowed woman who does not observe this fast by mistake, she becomes inferior to her husband and suffers various kinds of miseries. If the person observing the fast is not able to fast for the whole day, then eat one meal at a time and on that day do the story of Navratri fasting with the bandhavas.
O Thursday! Let me tell you the holy history of the one who has observed this fast earlier. You listen carefully. Thus hearing the words of Brahma ji, Brihaspati ji said – O brahmin! Tell me the history of this fast for the welfare of human beings, I am listening carefully. Have mercy on me taking refuge in you.
Brahma ji said – There lived a Brahmin named orphan in a beautiful city named Pithat. He was a devotee of Goddess Durga. A very beautiful daughter named Sumati with the real name was born to be the first creation of Mano Brahma with all her virtues. That girl Sumati, playing with her friends in the childhood of her house, started growing in such a way that the moon’s art increases in the bright half. His father used to worship and do home of Durga every day. At that time she also used to be present there by law. One day that Sumati started playing with her friends and did not attend the worship of Bhagwati. Her father got angry seeing such carelessness of the daughter and started saying to the daughter that O wicked daughter! You have not worshiped Bhagwati since morning today, because of this I will marry you with some leprosy and poor man.
Sumati felt very sad after hearing the words of her angry father and started saying to her father, ‘O father! I am your daughter I am subordinate to you in all respects. Do as you wish. You can marry me with King Kushti or any other person as you wish, but it will happen that which is written in my destiny, I have full faith in it.
Man thinks of so many desires, but it is the same which has been written by the creator in fate, whatever he does, he also gets the fruits according to that action, because it is under the control of man to act. But the fruit is under the divine. Just as the Trinaati lying in the fire makes the fire more flaming, similarly the brahmin got very angry after hearing such fearless words of his daughter. Then he married his daughter with leprosy and being very angry started saying to the daughter that go-go fast and enjoy the fruits of your karma. See what you do by relying only on luck?
Hearing the bitter words of her father said in this way, Sumati started thinking in her mind that – Aha! It is my great misfortune that I got such a husband. In this way, thinking of her misery, Sumati went to the forest with her husband and spent the night with great pain at that place with dreadful misery. Seeing such a condition of that poor girl, Bhagwati appeared with the effect of past virtue and started saying to Sumati that O humble brahmin! I am happy for you, you can ask for any boon you want.
When I am happy, I am going to give desired results. Thus hearing the words of Bhagwati Durga, the brahmin started saying, “Who are you who have been pleased with me, tell all that to me and with your grace, bless my poor maidservant. Hearing such a brahmin’s word, the goddess started saying that I am Adi Shakti and I am Brahmavidya and Saraswati. O brahmin! I am pleased with the effect of the virtue of your previous birth on you.
